Mais c\u2019est avec Guild Wars 2 que l\u2019\u00e9quipe a pouss\u00e9 les limites du genre : un d\u00e9veloppement de dix ans (de la phase de r\u00e9flexion initiale \u00e0 la sortie en 2012, puis aux extensions post-lancement) qui a forg\u00e9 un univers immersif et une communaut\u00e9 durable.<\/p>\n<p>1. Contexte : ArenaNet et la naissance du projet Guild Wars 2<br \/>\nApr\u00e8s le succ\u00e8s de Guild Wars (plus de 6 millions de copies vendues d\u2019ici 2007), ArenaNet a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de lancer un projet ambitieux : Guild Wars 2. L\u2019objectif n\u2019\u00e9tait pas une simple suite, mais une refonte profonde du genre, en r\u00e9ponse aux limites des MMORPG de l\u2019\u00e9poque (repetition des quests, syst\u00e8me de combat trop lin\u00e9aire, manque d\u2019immersion dans le monde).  <\/p>\n<p>La phase de r\u00e9flexion initiale a d\u00e9but\u00e9 en 2007, avec une \u00e9quipe de 50 personnes environ (contre 30 pour Guild Wars). L\u2019\u00e9quipe a identifi\u00e9 trois axes cl\u00e9s : d\u00e9passer le mod\u00e8le des quests lin\u00e9aires, rendre le combat plus dynamique et cr\u00e9er un univers qui r\u00e9agit aux actions des joueurs. Seattle, hub am\u00e9ricain de l\u2019industrie du jeu vid\u00e9o, a favoris\u00e9 des \u00e9changes avec des studios voisins (Valve, Bungie) pour inspirer ces innovations.<\/p>\n<p>2. Les piliers fondateurs du d\u00e9veloppement (2007-2010)<br \/>\nLa p\u00e9riode 2007-2010 a \u00e9t\u00e9 celle de la d\u00e9finition des m\u00e9canismes qui ont fait la sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 de Guild Wars 2 :  <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u00c9v\u00e9nements dynamiques (Dynamic Events) : Au lieu de missions r\u00e9p\u00e9titives \u00ab aller chercher X \u00bb, ArenaNet a cr\u00e9\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me o\u00f9 le monde r\u00e9agit aux actions des joueurs. Par exemple, dans Queensdale, d\u00e9fendre un village contre des loups d\u00e9clenche un \u00e9v\u00e9nement secondaire (r\u00e9paration des champs) ou majeur (attaque du chef loup). Ce syst\u00e8me a n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 des centaines d\u2019heures de design pour mapper chaque cha\u00eene d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements.<br \/>\n&#8211; Combat sans cible bas\u00e9e sur la menace : Contrairement \u00e0 la plupart des MMORPG, Guild Wars 2 n\u2019utilise pas de \u00ab cible fixe \u00bb : le combat repose sur la position (attaques \u00e0 distance n\u00e9cessitent de viser) et la menace (ennemis attaquent les joueurs qui infligent le plus de d\u00e9g\u00e2ts). Ce choix a rendu le combat plus dynamique.<br \/>\n&#8211; Histoire personnelle (Personal Story) : Chaque joueur choisit son origine (humain, sylvari, nain) et ses d\u00e9cisions influencent l\u2019histoire. Par exemple, sauver un enfant dans un \u00e9v\u00e9nement permet de le retrouver plus tard dans le parcours.<br \/>\n&#8211; 10 classes avec m\u00e9canismes uniques : Le voleur utilise la furtivit\u00e9, le mage \u00e9l\u00e9mentaire alterne entre quatre \u00e9l\u00e9ments, etc. Aucune classe n\u2019est \u00ab obligatoire \u00bb pour les groupes, contrairement \u00e0 d\u2019autres MMORPG.<\/p>\n<p>3. D\u00e9fis techniques et cr\u00e9atifs (2010-2012 : phase finale)<br \/>\nLa phase finale a \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9e par des d\u00e9fis majeurs :  <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Architecture des serveurs : Les \u00e9v\u00e9nements dynamiques n\u00e9cessitent que des centaines de joueurs interagissent simultan\u00e9ment. ArenaNet a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une architecture capable de g\u00e9rer des zones dynamiques (instances) connect\u00e9es entre elles. Ce travail a pris deux ans et n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 des tests intensifs.<br \/>\n&#8211; Moteur graphique : Mise \u00e0 jour du moteur de Guild Wars pour supporter DirectX 11, avec effets de lumi\u00e8re dynamiques (ombres qui changent avec le soleil), v\u00e9g\u00e9tation r\u00e9aliste (herbes qui se plient au vent) et textures haute r\u00e9solution. La r\u00e9gion Metrica Province (pour les sylvari) a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue avec des plantes lumineuses r\u00e9actives \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re.<br \/>\n&#8211; Narration et continuit\u00e9 : Guild Wars 2 se d\u00e9roule 250 ans apr\u00e8s le premier opus. L\u2019\u00e9quipe a r\u00e9solu ce d\u00e9fi en introduisant des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences subtiles (monuments aux h\u00e9ros du premier jeu) sans rendre le jeu inaccessible aux nouveaux joueurs.<br \/>\n&#8211; Tests publics et feedback : Beta ferm\u00e9e en 2011 (100 000 joueurs am\u00e9ricains), beta ouverte en 2012. Les retours ont permis d\u2019ajuster la difficult\u00e9 des \u00e9v\u00e9nements majeurs et l\u2019\u00e9quilibre des classes (ex: renforcement du voleur en combat groupe).<\/p>\n<p>4. Sortie et ann\u00e9es post-lancement (2012-2022)<br \/>\nGuild Wars 2 a \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9 le 28 ao\u00fbt 2012 aux \u00c9tats-Unis et en Europe. Il a vendu 2 millions de copies en 24 heures et re\u00e7u 90\/100 sur Metacritic. Le d\u00e9veloppement n\u2019a pas s\u2019arr\u00eat\u00e9 l\u00e0 :  <\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Extensions majeures : Heart of Thorns (2015, r\u00e9gion Maguuma, classe revenant), Path of Fire (2017, r\u00e9gion Elona), End of Dragons (2022, 10e anniversaire, r\u00e9gion Cantha).<br \/>\n&#8211; \u00c9quipe Live Team : Bas\u00e9e \u00e0 Seattle, elle publie des mises \u00e0 jour mensuelles (nouvelles zones, \u00e9v\u00e9nements saisonniers comme Halloween, ajustements de classes).
